Let’s Be Real

I am not someone who came from a community where therapy was expected or “normal.” Growing up, therapy was just something rich people did in the movies. So, I know how hard it can be reaching out for the first time if you’ve never had therapy or come from a place where therapy is viewed as a weakness or something shameful. Often times, males, people of color, and those that do not come from financially privileged backgrounds have been taught not to openly discuss their problems, especially with an outsider. I understand how hard it is to ask for help and I know it takes courage to reveal yourself.

My approach is to be non-judgmental and flexible so therapy goes at your own pace and comfort level. I enjoy working with people from all walks of life. I see some folks who come for brief therapy and enjoy the fast paced solution-oriented approach while others stay much longer to slowly build trust and do the deeper work. Truly, there is no one right way, only your way. I honor what works best for you.

In terms of education, I am a first generation college graduate and I consider myself fortunate to have had the opportunity to obtain higher education. I have a bachelor’s degree in psychology and social behavior from the University of California Irvine and a master’s degree in marriage and family therapy from Alliant International University, a COAMFT accredited school.

I have been in the field of social services for many years. Much of my therapeutic work has been with individuals and families facing severe mental health challenges and substance use problems in community mental health. Additionally, I have worked with justice system involved individuals and families facing trauma, incarceration, and substance use disorders. Before becoming a therapist, I worked with adults with developmental disabilities, at-risk teens, children and adults with autism, and students with behavioral and academic struggles. What my varied career has taught me is that no matter the challenge we are facing, there is hope and resiliency that can be discovered, utilized, and strengthened.
